The .PT (DNS.PT Association), the entity responsible for managing Portugal’s domains, has revised its registration rules. Among the new measures is data verification as a condition for completing certain operations on .PT domains.

This change accompanies the new cybersecurity legal framework now in force in Portugal and reinforces a simple goal: to ensure that every .PT domain has a real, contactable holder with correct data. This protects the domain owner (preventing losses caused by lack of contact) and increases trust across the entire .PT ecosystem.

When does verification apply?

Contact verification is required in three situations:

  1. Registration of a new .PT domain where a new holder contact is associated, or an existing one that has not yet been verified.
  2. Transfer of ownership of a domain (change of holder);
  3. Change of the email or phone number associated with the holder’s contact.

If you already have .PT domains registered and are not going to change the email/phone or change the holder, you do not need to do anything right away - your domains will continue to work normally. Verification is triggered only when one of the operations above occurs.

How it works, step by step

Step 1 - Data validated on entry

When you fill in the domain holder’s data (at the site checkout or in the client area), the fields are now validated on the spot, while the form is still open. This lets you correct any slip immediately, without having to wait for a later response.

The holder’s data includes:

  • Name
  • NIF (tax number, with 9 digits and a valid check digit)
  • Phone contact (with a validated format - e.g.: +351 9XX XXX XXX)
  • Email
  • Address, Postal Code and City

What changes in the form:

  • Missing required fields are flagged (e.g.: “The Name field is required”).
  • An invalid NIF, or one with an incorrect number of digits, is rejected (“The NIF must have 9 digits”).
  • A phone number with an incorrect format is not accepted.

Step 2 - Email verification

After the data is validated, a confirmation is sent to the holder’s email. Simply follow the instructions received to confirm that the email address is valid and accessible. Once the email is confirmed, the email verified indication appears.

Step 3 - Phone contact verification

After the email, the phone contact is verified. The method depends on the type of number provided:

  • Mobile - by SMS: a message is sent with a verification code. Enter the code in the field indicated and confirm. The code expires after 10 minutes. If it does not arrive, you can request a resend.

  • Landline - by call: you receive a phone call that gives the verification code. You must enter the code in the field indicated and confirm. The code expires after 10 minutes. If it does not arrive, you can request a resend.

Once these steps are complete, the holder has email and phone verified and the operation can proceed.

What if there is invalid data or contacts still pending verification?

  • Missing or invalid data: the form does not proceed until it is corrected. Because validation is done on entry, the correction is immediate.
  • Unverified contact: while the email or phone is not confirmed, the operation (registration, transfer or change) remains pending. Check that the email and number provided are correct and accessible, and repeat the verification.
  • You did not receive the code: confirm the number/address, request a resend and wait a few moments. Remember that the SMS code is valid for 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to verify the contacts of domains I already have? No, as long as you do not change the holder’s email/phone or transfer ownership. Verification is triggered only in those operations and for new registrations.

Can I use a landline number? Yes. In that case, verification is done by call with a code, instead of SMS.

How long do I have to enter the code received? The code sent by SMS is valid for 10 minutes. If it expires, you can request a new one.

Will my email and phone be publicly visible? The holder’s email no longer appears in the public WHOIS information. The contacts are now used only for management and contact purposes associated with the domain.

My data was wrong. Do I have to start over? No. Because validation happens on entry, you correct the data on the spot, while the form is still open, and continue the process.

Does this change make registration slower? It only adds email and phone confirmation at the time of registration. In return, it avoids confirmations and correction requests after the sale, making the process smoother overall.
